Perhaps he could've lived with himself if Jayden or Madison had gotten to Shaun, but they didn't. This one's similar to "Tears in the Rain." Ethan has given it his all – followed clues, hurt himself, hurt others – but his own screw-ups have led to him being locked away in jail while his son slowly drowns out in the world. Could Quantic Dream be hinting at a sequel? A forthcoming DLC mission? The fact that Madison isn't going to live happily ever after? We don't know, but the "Heroine" ending sends a chill up our spines. He goes on about how Miss Paige deserves "a better adversary" who is more "ferocious," and by the time our lady looks up, Vincent has disappeared. We never see Vincent's face, but the music and his voice make it pretty clear he's not a good guy. After getting lauded with compliments and basking in her success at a book signing for a while, a creepy dude named Vincent shows up to have a conversation with Madison. Well, as happy as a Heavy Rain ending can be.

Yes, crack the Origami Killer's password-protected computer, get to the warehouse, and save Shaun and you get one of the game's happy endings. Who says the hero has to be a man? When Ethan and Jayden bungle saving Shaun, it's Madison to the rescue. He goes on a drug binge, has a conversation with himself in the ARI world, and overdoses in the real world. Jayden's still relatively green when it comes to being an FBI agent – at the start of the game he had never killed anyone and he really didn't seem that adept at his job without his fancy toys – so when Shaun dies because the FBI agent couldn't figure out the clues, Jayden breaks down. When things don't work out, it's a disaster.

When things work out in Heavy Rain, Jayden kicks his habit and begins to make his way toward a better life. Sure, he was a good enough guy, but it was clear he was addicted to triptocaine and ARI, his detective goggles that cataloged cases. OK, so Jayden was never all there to begin with in Heavy Rain. His death is on her hands, and that's something Madison can't forgive herself for – so cue the masked men in her apartment and have them work for all eternity. If Ethan's taken out of the equation, Jayden can't figure out the clues, and Madison survives the apartment fire but can't crack the killer's computer, our female photographer is left knowing that she was super-close to saving Shaun but failed when he needed her the most. Play Heavy Rain in the right way, and you discover that one nightmare is just beginning. It was crazy, and it immediately sucked us into Madison's living nightmare of insomnia. Even if you do everything right, the lady dies by a blade. Here's this pretty woman who we just saw naked, and now she's running around her house and dodging knife attacks. For us – blindly coming into Heavy Rain with no spoilers known – Madison's first dream sequence was a trip. He raises a pistol to his head and blows himself away in a graveyard in front of his girlfriend on his son's plot. Madison's yammering about moving on and having another kid, but Ethan doesn't want to hear it. Standing at Shaun's grave – the visual reminder that he failed his family – Ethan only knows pain. That's where "Tears in the Rain" picks up. For the second time in your life, you've lost a son and it's all your fault. Now, imagine if you screwed everything up – Shaun's dead, you didn't save him, Madison didn't get there to help him, and Jayden gave up. Everything you're doing in the game is somehow tied to Shaun's disappearance, so by the end of the last trial, the game is designed to make you feel like you're Ethan and you'd do anything for your boy. There's a lot going on in Heavy Rain, but the main emotional thread is a father trying to save his kidnapped son.

We'll tell you how to get the ending, show it to you, and then tell you why it's so messed up. Here, IGN has assembled the five endings that we thought were the craziest, the most jaw-dropping, and – generally – the most effed-up. Which endings are the best? Why the most effed-up ones, of course. However, we know a lot of people didn't have the time to go get every ending there is in the game, and that sucks because the endings are some of the best parts of Heavy Rain. See, the Heavy Rain story only gets better the more you play it and the more you flesh out the tale.

If you haven't finished the game, we're spoiling it. For two months, we here at IGN have been biting our tongues and going out of our way not to talk about specifics when it comes to Heavy Rain – with the exception of our Spoiler Room video feature – but we've decided the time for silence has come and gone.
